Bee-pollinated Vegetables
Here is our selection of organic vegetable seed for growing vegetables that benefit their pollinators. Without pollinators we would not have these vegetables (nor most of the other fruit and vegetables we rely on). These seed are 100% organic and 'Open-Pollinated' - a term which means that these plants, when grown in the field, will produce flowers that will be pollinated by their own pollinators (such as bees) and will go on to fruit, and produce within the fruit, viable seed which can (and should) be saved, to sow the following year. This is every grower's, and every human being's, right. We are certified with the Soil Association
However, this 'right' is under threat simply because commercial growers are increasingly using F1 cultivars (meaning their seed cannot be saved), or non-open-pollinated seed, meaning these cultivars are not pollinated by insects at all; the seed is produced in laboratory environments, and the plant will no longer be playing a major role in the natural world. If we only rely on commercial growers' crops, using those kinds of seed, the majority of farmland will provide very little for wildlife. The other (though hopefully will never become legal in Europe) more insidious again would be GM seed; we will not even broach this apocalyptic plant breeding method here, and hope we never have to. Unfortunately, F1, Non-open-pollinated and GM seed around the world contribute to insect and pollinator collapse, since their methodolgy works against rather than with nature, and totally lacks regard for pollinators or beneficial insects.
