EVERGREEN PERENNIAL (short lived) growing to 0.5 m (1ft 8in). Prefers dry or rocky places. Hardy to zone 7. Flowers April to November inseveral flushes. The true wild species, of which there are many cultivars, which produces flowers in succession over several months, helping to bridge the ‘June-gap’. Interestingly, recent research has shown that this plant contains the chemical compound cheiranthin which has a stronger cardiotonic action than digitalis (obtained from Digitalis species such as Foxglove) and supporting a failing heart in a similar manner. If taken in large doses this is very poisonous and so this plant should not be used medicinally without expert supervision. Pollinated by Bees. Produces POLLEN & NECTAR. PLANTS – 1 Litre £3.00.
