Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead'
English Lavender, dwarf: M, N, P, B, *, Jul-Sept
EVERGREEN SHRUB growing to 0.6m (2ft) by 0.6m (2ft). A compact variety with deep blue flowers. Likes well-drained (not acid) soil.
Hardy to zone 5. It is in flower from July to September. Producing abundant, blue, sweetly aromatic flowers, it is specially useful for helping bees build up their winter reserves of fat and protein. Its essential oil may assist bees in ridding themselves of varroa mites (though it doesn’t appear to kill them, they seem weakened by it). For planting a hedge (which attracts bees in droves), we recommend a planting distance of 12-18inches (30-46cm). Medicinally used for anti-depressant and relaxing properties and flowers are added to salads, jelly, ice-cream or tea. The oil of this species is prized by many people around the world over and above other Lavender oils. The flowers are pollinated by Bees, lepidoptera. It is noted for attracting wildlife. Produces POLLEN & NECTAR.
