Melittis melissophyllum - Honey-scented Balm 30s ORGANIC
Honey-scented Balm: (M), N, P, B, May – July
NATIVE PERENNIAL WILDFLOWER growing to 0.6m (2ft) by 0.4m (16”). Shade-loving, clump-forming, prefers free-draining soil. This absolutely beautiful native wildflower is sadly so rare that there are hardly any references to it as a plant for bees. However, in June, when other flowers are thin on the ground, this one which is covered in masses of flowers is absolutely buzzing with all sorts of bees. It produces enormous (compared to other members of the Deadnettle family) pink and white flowers. Its old English common name (which we don’t really want to mention here, but feel we should) is Bastard Balm, so have decided to give it a new one – Honey-scented Balm because the foliage is, in fact, honey-scented, and remains so after drying. Traditionally it is used in ‘Maybowl’ beverages.
SEEDS organic packet (of 30) £3.05. Propagation tip: Sow these in a terracotta pot and half bury outside in a shady, moist place, with a slate or similar to cover over winter which should break any dormancy before spring.
