Origanum vulgare - Wild Oregano
Wild Oregano: M, N, P, B, *, Jul-Sept, T!
NATIVE PERENNIAL WILDFLOWER growing to 0.6 m (2ft) by 0.8 m (2ft 7in). Prefers dry, infertile and calcareous soil. Stands in wild grassland, spreading by seed in disturbed soil. Hardy to zone 5. It is in flower from July to September. Dark purple buds open to pink or purple flowers. Has been used as a culinary and medicinal herb for thousands of years and is one of the best natural antiseptics because of its high ‘Thymol’ content – which helps bees control varroa mites. This is our native species with a milder flavour than the Mediterranean grown same species. The flowers are pollinated by Bees, lepidoptera. Produces POLLEN & NECTAR. It is noted for attracting wildlife. SEEDS 1g/£1.55 (best sown in autumn)
